India – the third largest startup ecosystem globally – saw VC investments of $6.51B through 468 rounds in 2016. Like Europe, Online Retail and Online Travel were investor favorites in India too, together amassing $1.1B across 52 rounds. Alternative Lending and EdTech, both among the top 10 ranked sectors globally, find a place in the top five spots in India. The following infograph drills down to the top 20 sectors based on funding and deal count, and tells you the most active investors in each of these sectors.

How we Ranked: We ranked the sectors using a custom multi-step algorithm accounting for the deals and dollars invested basis participation from marquee investors, and other signals.

Only funding rounds greater than $1M have been included in this infograph. The chart excludes debt, post IPO and grants; horizontal sectors such as SaaS and marketplaces, and the energy sector. In the healthcare sector, only healthcare analytics and healthcare IT were included.
